Temperature-Based Fan Speed Controller Using Arduino

Jadhav Pratiksha Dattatray. SY-BTech (Electrical)

jpratiksha3101@gmail.com

This project introduces a temperature-based fan speed controller using an Arduino microcontroller. As demand grows for energy-efficient and automated devices, temperature-controlled systems offer an effective solution for managing power consumption and maintaining environmental comfort. The fan speed controller uses an LM35 temperature sensor to detect real-time temperature levels and adjust the fan speed accordingly.

This system is particularly useful in applications where maintaining a specific temperature range is crucial, such as in computers, mixers, oven HVAC systems, and electronic device enclosures. Additionally, the project is cost-effective, straightforward to implement, and adaptable for various temperature ranges by simply adjusting the Arduino code. This makes it an ideal.

1. Introduction:

With advancements in technology, managing temperature efficiently has become essential in both household and industrial applications. Many electronic devices, from computers to HVAC systems, generate heat during operation, and if this heat is not controlled effectively, it can lead to issues like reduced performance, overheating, and potential hardware failure.

A temperature-based fan speed controller is an efficient solution, allowing fans to adjust their speed according to the temperature, providing cooling only when needed. Traditionally, fans operate at a constant speed regardless of temperature changes, leading to excessive energy use, increased noise, and faster wear. In contrast, a temperature-controlled fan system can regulate speed based on the temperature of the environment, ensuring cooling as needed. This adaptive approach conserves energy, extends fan life, and maintains a stable environment for electronic components.

This project focuses on developing a temperature-based fan speed controller using the Arduino microcontroller. By using an LM35 temperature sensor, the Arduino reads real-time temperature data and uses Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) to adjust the fan speed. When the temperature rises, the PWM signal increases, causing the fan to spin faster; as the temperature decreases, the fan slows down, saving energy and reducing noise.

This system has wide-ranging applications in areas where temperature control is crucial, such as in computers, power supplies, and electronic enclosures. The Arduino-based temperature controller is not only cost-effective and easy to implement but also customizable for different environments. This project demonstrates how simple microcontroller-based systems can create smarter, energy-efficient solutions in temperature management.

2. Problem Identification:

In various applications such as computers, home appliances, and industrial systems, electronic components generate significant heat that can impair performance and shorten their lifespan if not managed properly. Traditional cooling fans often operate at a constant speed regardless of temperature fluctuations, which leads to excessive power consumption, increased noise levels, and unnecessary wear on the fan.A temperature-based fan speed controller, however, can adjust fan speed according to the real-time temperature, optimizing cooling only when needed and contributing to energy efficiency, noise reduction, and enhanced component longevity. The objective of this project is to design a temperature-based fan speed controller using an Arduino microcontroller.
This system will dynamically regulate fan speed based on real-time temperature readings, providing an efficient, automated solution for cooling applications. Specifically, the Arduino will read temperature data from a sensor.

3. System Overview:

Fig 1. Circuit diagram of automatic fan speed controller using Arduino

A temperature-based fan speed controller using an Arduino adjusts the speed of a fan depending on the temperature in its surroundings. This system is efficient and saves energy by only increasing fan speed when necessary. Here’s how it works:

Components Required:
1. Arduino (e.g., Arduino Uno)
2. Temperature Sensor (e.g., LM35)
3. DC Fan or PWM Fan
4. NPN Transistor
5. Resistors (for transistor or MOSFET base/gate)
6. Diode (e.g., 1N4007, to prevent back EMF from the fan) Power Supply (for fan if it operates at a different voltage than the Arduino) 8. Breadboard and Jumper Wires

4. Result:

Fig 2. Project photo of IoT-based air quality monitoring system

InFig.2 a temperature-based fan speed controller using an Arduino adjusts the speed of a fan depending on the temperature in its surroundings. This system is efficient and saves energy by only increasing fan speed when necessary.

5. Conclusion:

This project elaborates on the design and construction of a fan speed control system to control the fan speed at room temperature. The temperature sensor was carefully chosen to gauge the room temperature. Moreover, the fan speed will increase. The system performs very well for any temperature changes and can be classified as automatic control.

6. Future Scope

The project will concentrate on an electric standard fan rather than another type of fan such as a ceiling fan. We can monitor more parameters like humidity, and light and at the same time control them. Integration with remote location using mobile or internet.

Using technology, we can be able to draw graphs of variation in these parameters using the computer. If the temperature exceeds the limit; a call will be dialed to the respective given number by an automatic Dialer system.

Energy Fundamentals:

Energy was defined as the capacity to do work, measured in joules or kilowatt-hours. The lecture highlighted two primary energy types: thermal energy (from fuels like coal, natural gas) and solar energy. Heat transfer occurs through three modes - conduction (solid materials), convection (fluids), and radiation (electromagnetic waves).

What is an Energy Audit?

An energy audit is a systematic inspection, survey, and analysis of energy flows in a building, process, or system. Its goal is to identify opportunities to reduce the amount of energy input without negatively affecting output.

Why is an Energy Audit Important?

It helps in identifying where, how, and how much energy is being consumed.

Detects areas of wastage or inefficiency.

Establishes a baseline for tracking energy performance improvements.

Supports organizations in meeting sustainability and regulatory requirements.

Benefits of Energy Audit

  1. Cost Savings: Reduces operational energy costs through efficiency improvements.
  2. Enhanced Equipment Lifespan: Identifies improper usage that can lead to wear and tear.
  3. Improved System Performance: Optimizes energy use for better performance.
  4. Environmental Benefits: Lowers carbon footprint and supports green initiatives.
Regulatory Compliance: Assists in meeting energy-related legislation or certifications.
  5. Informed Decision-Making: Provides data to plan investments in energy-saving technologies.

Energy Costs in Maharashtra:

The expert shared current energy costs:
        Electricity: ₹10/kWh
        Compressed air: ₹200/cfm

        Steam: ₹1,500/ton
Hidden costs like leakage (₹100 lakh/year) and inefficient motors (30% extra consumption)
were emphasized as key audit targets.

Energy Audit Process:

A systematic 3-stage approach was explained:

  1. Walk-through audit: Quick inspection focusing on obvious wastage
  2. Detailed audit: Equipment testing and data logging
  3. Investment-grade audit: Comprehensive analysis with ROI calculations.

Key Visual Tools for Energy Audit Analysis

For enhanced understanding, the lecture suggested several visual aids that could effectively communicate energy concepts. These include energy pyramids demonstrating primary to useful energy conversion, comparative infographics of cost distributions across energy types, and thermal images revealing equipment inefficiencies. Process flowcharts were recommended to illustrate audit methodologies, while before-after consumption charts could powerfully demonstrate audit outcomes. Photographic evidence of audit instrumentation, such as power analyzers and ultrasonic leak detectors, would further enrich the technical presentation.
