Paper Publication

Abhishek Srivastava, S. Saravanan “Harmonic mitigation using optimal active power filter for the improvement of power quality for an electric vehicle charging station” e-Prime - Advances in Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Energy, Volume 8, June 2024, (Elsevier -Scopus indexed)

Abstract: The idea of electric vehicles (EVs) is relatively new in the transportation industry. EVs are becoming increasingly popular due to many advantages. Apart from various advantages, some drawbacks of these vehicles are also a concern. One of the concerns for these vehicles is the substantial power requirement to charge the batteries. During charging, EVs deteriorate the power quality by injecting harmonic current into the system. As poor power quality is undesirable, the mitigation of this harmonic current is essential. Therefore, in this study, an optimal design of a shunt active power filter (SAPF) based EV charging system is suggested. The optimal design of the SAPF ensures that the DC-link voltage is efficiently regulated. To test the performance of the suggested scheme, a simulation system is developed and tested in MATLAB Simulink. The results show that the developed optimal control can efficiently regulate the DC-link voltage. The results, pre and post-compensation, show that the total harmonic distortion in the system is reduced to 4.33 % from 26.72 % using the suggested approach. This is even better by 12.93%, 7.39%, 14.32% and 20.32% in comparison to particle swarm optimization, whale optimization algorithms, bee colony optimization and ant colony optimization used for comparison.

TRACTON MACHINE WORKSHOP

Komal Dilip Kalamkar TE-B(Electrical)

(komalkalamkar009@gmail.com)

All the locomotives were using DC traction motors. The speed/torque regulation is achieved by using either a tap changer on a transformer or through resistance control on the majority of these locomotives. DC motor has inherent problems of brush gear, commutator, and low power-to-weight ratio. DC motor is essentially a high current low voltage design that calls for expensive large diameter cables and large electro-pneumatic reversers, contactors, switches, etc. Thyristor-based DC traction motor drives are more efficient, but they suffer from high harmonics that are injected into the Power supply. Hence large filters are used to reduce the effect of harmonics. Also, Emphasis on regeneration is increasing day by day to reduce energy bills as well as to save energy for the greater national cause. With ever increasing need for hauling higher loads, there is a need to make maximum use of available adhesion. There is a need for track-friendly locomotives to reduce track maintenance efforts.

1. Problem identification

The Squirrel-cage Induction Motors are the most widely used electrical machines for industrial, commercial, and domestic applications. They are more widespread than any other electric machine in the industry due to their intrinsic ruggedness and reduced cost. These machines have created a revolution in the world economy as most of the production processes in a developed country are carried out by utilizing an induction machine. Recently, the use of adjustable speed drives has also spread in many applications. Hence, sudden failures in these machines can be catastrophic for the processes in which they are involved. These machines are therefore seeking more attention from researchers to diagnose the various faults occurring in these machines and to develop various monitoring and signal processing techniques that can be applied for prognosis. Electrical machines and drive systems are subject to many different types of faults.

2. Introduction

The traction motor is an asynchronous 6-pole squirrel cage rotor motor that operates by a three-phase supply fed by 3 phase converters. It is forced air cooled through a vent in the non-drive end housing. The traction motor blower supplies filtered air to cool the traction motor. The flexible bellows connect the traction motor vent and the air outlet of the blowers on the locomotive underframe. Inductive WPTS uses magnetic fields that are a natural part of the current movement through the wire. When electrical current moves through a wire, it creates a circular magnetic field around the wire. In this system, alternating voltage applied to one part of the coil induces a different terminal voltage of the counterpart at the same frequency.

3. Main Parts of Traction Motor

3.1.      Stator:

The stator is constructed from a stack of laminated plates secured together by wrap-around rings and traction rails welded to the end plates. The stator winding is insulated under vacuum conditions with a solvent-free silicon resin using the ABB 200 class “Veridur” insulating system. Temperature probes are provided in the stator stack, which monitors the temperature of the stator winding during operation and thus stator windings are protected from thermal overload.

3.3 Rotor Bearing:

The rotor is supported and guided at both ends on two grease-lubricated cylindrical roller bearings. Radial non-contacting seals are provided to protect the bearings from the loss of grease and penetration of dirt.

3.4 Incoming testing

1. Bring the motor to the testing place.

2. Check the insulation resistance between each phase and the earth with a 2.5 kV megger.

3. It should be min 2.18 M Ohms.

4. Carry out continuity test between phase to phase with 500V megger

5. Run the motor at 100 V 3 phase AC 50 Hz for 5 minutes and measure the current in each phase.

6. Carry out the run test of the motor by raising the voltage gradually to 400 V AC for 2 Hrs. Then measure & record the following:

Current in each phase, Bearing noise (DE & NDE side) and Vibration

7. Check the bearing temperature on both end shields and record the temperature rise.

8. Record the speed of the motor with the help of a tachometer.

6. Conclusion

In various types of motors reconditioned in the traction motor workshop specifically, we have studied 6FRA 6068. Because it is the most used motor in various locomotives. Until now we have observed and analyzed stator faults and their rewinding. Make modifications in motor design to avoid failures.
