Tyre Pressure Monitoring System

Abstract:

The Tyre Pressure Monitoring System, which is used today, indicates only whether the air pressure in any of the tyres is below a particular level of safety. This avoidable signal has made it possible for the statistical death rate to come up to 650 deaths per year. This project displays values through continuous monitoring. Therefore, this research proposed a method to accumulate the various factors of the tyre and to display them to the driver for a safer experience. The proposed TPMS has an electronic device unit that is attached to the tyre and transmits the values of the pressure, temperature, and the wheel alignment to the unit to be placed inside the vehicle, observable to the driver. This unit includes pressure sensors, microcontrollers, RF transmission, and batteries. An alert is introduced that indicates if the pressure exceeds the maximum or minimum safe pressure level. Several experiments have been carried out to analyze the proposed system. The integrated TPMS has proven to be an effective alternative to maintaining the tyres and aims to improve the comfort and safety of the driver.

1. Introduction:

According to research, there is an increase in the number of accidents that take place due to the carelessness associated towards the low air pressure in tyres. In India alone, 35-40% of accidents that have taken place occur due to tyre bursts in the past 5 Years. Tyre blowouts are one of the most common reasons for accidents that take place. T. Xiangjunet al. [1]1 proposed that the event of a sudden flat tire accounted for 49.81% of highway accidents, in 2006. N. N. Hasan and A. Arif [2] proposed that the current tyre pressure sensors indicate a symbol in the dashboard of the car that people usually tend to ignore. Currently, there are two basic methods to measure tire pressure: direct and indirect. The direct technique is implemented, but with the use of a differential pressure sensor. This project will ensure that the driver will have the exact air pressures of all the tyres of the car displayed continuously. It also deals with the wear and tear of the tyre. One more aspect of the project is the temperature and wheel alignment of the car. When the car is driven in the most moderate conditions, there is greater longevity of the tyres while simultaneously providing a smoother and safer drive. In the currently used products, they aren't available for the wear and tear of tyres. However, through more research and technological interventions, we're looking forward to this product's display.

• Tyre pressure is measured and displayed constantly.

•The wheel alignment will help in parking and keeping the tyres in an optimum condition during parking.

• The temperature sensor that indicates the wear and tear of the tyre, along with the frictional changes applied to it.

            2. Problem Identification:

The lack of proper tire pressure monitoring in vehicles can lead to several safety and performance issues, such as tire blowouts, loss of vehicle control, uneven tire wear, reduced fuel efficiency, and increased stopping distances. These problems arise from underinflated or overinflated tires, which can cause premature tire damage, higher maintenance costs, and greater risk of accidents. Without an effective system like TPMS, drivers may not be alerted to critical tire pressure changes, compromising vehicle safety, performance, and efficiency.

3. System Overview:

In our project of TPMS, we have effectively managed to construct a system which will effectively and accurately help us to read and determine the values of the tire pressure and the tire temperature at any time, as and when we require. This has been done using Arduino UNO along with nRFL01 transmitter receiver module, and BMP180 pressure sensor and our temperature sensor. Fig. 1 shows the flow diagram of the Tyre Pressure Monitoring System.

4. Circuit Diagram:

5. Objectives

1. Enhance Safety: Alerts drivers to low or high tire pressure, preventing accidents like blowouts or loss of control.
2. Improve Fuel Efficiency: Ensures tires are properly inflated, reducing rolling resistance and saving fuel.
3. Extend Tire Life: Prevents uneven tire wear by maintaining optimal tire pressure.
4. Reduce Maintenance Costs: Helps avoid costly tire repairs and replacements by ensuring proper tire condition.
5. Promote Better Vehicle Performance: Ensures proper tire pressure for improved handling and braking.

6. Future Scope

The RF in the system can be blocked or negatively affected by the ferrous content in tires, which makes specially manufactured tires necessary. This system can further be enhanced into one where this is not a limitation leading to longer life, fuel saving, rolling resistance and ultimately environmentally green tires. Also, an Independent TPMS system can be developed, which makes it easy for people to switch from their typical tires to these safe ones even in their older cars. Furthermore, wireless technology and solar-powered TPMS systems could become more prevalent, reducing the need for battery replacements and ensuring more sustainable operation. As vehicle automation continues to grow, TPMS could work in tandem with other vehicle systems to automatically adjust tyre pressures based on road conditions and driving patterns, enhancing safety and efficiency for future generations of vehicles.

7. Conclusion

In this project, we are trying to build a device that helps to monitor the temperature and pressure of the respective tires. This project contains a combination of techniques to implement a solution to measure tire pressure and also provides the required data to the driver through an LCD. This system should be required in vehicles. The system ensures measured tire pressure, which is vital for preventing the problems that were thanks by underinflated tires, like road accidents, etc. With ongoing improvements, TPMS will continue to be an essential feature in modern vehicles, contributing to safer and more efficient driving experiences.
